Step away from your manuscript

One piece of advice I hear over and over again is:

 ‘step away from your manuscript’

Getting some distance from your book is so important, and yet telling a writer to leave their MS for a few weeks is like telling Edward Cullen to stop being so darn hot and brooding. It’s not gonna happen.

I know how hard it is, believe me I know. I’m the queen of ‘fine-tuning’. But think of it like being on the Titanic: if you’re so busy scrubbing the deck, you’re not going to notice the giant iceberg looming towards you.

Try looking up once in a while!

If you do, you might just notice the gaping plot holes, the characters who have miraculously come back to life, the lack of pace, the sloppy writing etc.

I know it’s hard, but put your MS away. Do it. Do it now. And don’t look at it again for at least two weeks. You’ll be grateful that you did.
